The Jollybops Science Show was established in 2002 and is a 6 time winner of the former NSW Department of Education Performing Arts Unit's Frater Award "Best Feedback from Schools" category. We are also a multi award winner at the NSW Education Expo. Created by experienced teachers Mark Nicholl and Trevor Atkinson, the show receives outstanding reviews by both students and teachers. All Jollybop Science shows presented support the new National Science Curriculum.
The Jollybops Science Show is a character based science show, bringing science alive for primary school students through exciting, stimulating and interactive demonstrations. Presented through the guise of the comic duo, the Jolly Wizard and Rusty the Robot (K-2) and the Jolly Professor (Dr Popoff) and Rusty the Robot (3-7), the shows combine colourful and explosive scientific demonstration, witty one liners, scientific dialogue and even science songs for the younger audiences. Pantomime, scientific explanations and humor are adjusted for the varying age groups leaving teachers as well as students, young to old wanting more.
Both our professional science communicators are passionate about science education and have been an inspiration to the 700,000 students and staff who have seen their shows throughout NSW, The ACT, Victoria and Queensland. They aim to inspire students and encourage a positive interest in science. The shows, and supporting educational material, are designed in line with the NSW Board of Studies Science and Technology Syllabuses as well as the new National Science Curriculum.
Main presenting Scientist, Teacher and Songwriter, Trevor Atkinson, with a Bachelor of Education, is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to Science. His ability to impart complex scientific concepts such as Physics, Chemistry, Solids. Liquids and Gases, Magnetism, Temperature, Energy, Hot and Cold, to vastly differently aged primary school students, have been applauded by countless teachers.
Mark Broughton is an accomplished actor and scientist, with over 15 year's performance experience. His rapier like wit, filled with memorable comic one liners, helps engage students in the hour long presentations. His character, Rusty the Robot, is mobbed each and every time he returns to a school.
The Jollybops have six shows to choose from. The innovative show, "Science with an Aboriginal Perspective Flight, Sound and Fire," has received rave reviews from Indigenous Educators and student audiences.
Jollybop Science Shows tour in schools throughout QLD, NSW, ACT and VICTORIA without funding or sponsorship. Each and every school day, the shows inspire and entertain hundreds of students to seek out scientific knowledge.
The Jollybops also have an entertainment show which features movement and music, a 6 foot Camel called Carmel and a lovely Fairy called Mary.
